Spirituality How the belief in God or Gods plays a pivotal role in The Odyssey and The Godfather epics Free Essay Example, 1500 words

Spirituality: The Belief in God or Gods as it Relates to The Odyssey and The Godfather The concept of god is a way of describing a power within a story that is outside of human control. This power can also be ascribed to a human within a story, giving them a control that is beyond what is normally within the frame of human control. In The Odyssey, Odysseus experiences a series of encounters with god or godlike powers that he must overcome to continue on his journey. In the film The Godfather (1972), the Corleone family becomes the embodiment of godlike powers, their spiritual life enhancing the nature of their own power through events of violence. The nature of myth and the way in which it defines powers within the supernatural experience can be seen in the nature of both epics, their respective contemporary cultures reflected through the defined powers that are beyond that of the human world. The Greek mythologies are designed with the expression of god embodying exaggerated human failures of character. The gods of the Greeks were petty, selfish, and full of hubris, even though they looked down on humans and punished them for the same kinds of characteristics. Both the internal world of men and the external world of nature, its power and imposing destruction, was explained through the mythologies. Myth was the way in which the unknown was approached, mankind needing answers to questions that were often beyond the scope of any technology that could be defined. The nature of The Godfather films is similar in that a larger, mysterious organization was given context and explanation through the vision and myths created by Mario Puzo, the writer of the novel. The novel was then translated into film by Francis Ford Coppola in which not only the myth of the Corleone family was brought into the public consciousness, but the film, itself, gained mythic status. According to Horrocks, The Godfather (1972) â€Å"peels awa y the veneer of civilization, revealing to us a culture steeped in blood and death† (79). The myth of the masculinity of the ‘male corporation’, also found extensively in Western genre films, becomes more organized and brought into the modern context through the ‘mafia’ films as â€Å"the shrinking from domesticity and the emphasis on violence and death† creates a resource in which power is shifted to something that is more mythic and grandiose (Horrocks 70).

It is evidently clear from the discussion that for the year 2008 Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Inc reported a net profit margin of 15.56%. This is fairly good and indicates that the management of the company has exercised good control over the administrative and operating expenses resulting in higher profitability margin. This is evident from the lower Retail operating expenses, Franchise costs, Sales marketing expenses etc in 2008 as compared to the previous year. Based on better cost management the company has also been able to earn a higher return on investment. In 2008 the company reported Return on Investment of 49%. Overview of Viking Trading and Exchange Networks

The Viking trade network included trading relationships into Europe, Charlemagnes Holy Roman Empire, into Asia, and the Islamic Abbasid empire. This is evidenced by the identification of items such as coins from North Africa recovered from a site in central Sweden and Scandinavian brooches from sites east of the Ural Mountains. Trade was a vital feature of the Norse Atlantic communities throughout their history and a way for the colonies to support their use of landnam, a sometime unreliable farming technique for environments the Norse didnt quite understand. Documentary evidence indicates that there were several groups of specific people who traveled between the Viking trading centers and other centers throughout Europe, as envoys, merchants or missionaries. Some travelers, such as the Carolingian missionary bishop Anskar (801-865) left extensive reports of their travels, giving us great insight to traders and their clients. Viking Trade Commodities The Norse traded commodities included slaves, but also coins, ceramics, and materials from specialized crafts such as copper-alloy casting and glass-working (beads and vessels both). The access to some commodities could make or break a colony: Greenlands Norse relied on trade in walrus and narwhal ivory and polar bear skins to support their ultimately failing farming strategies. Metallurgical analysis at Hrisbru in Iceland indicates that the elite Norse traded in bronze objects and raw material from the tin-rich regions in Britain. Significant trade in dried fish emerged near the end of the 10th century AD in Norway. There, cod played a significant role in Viking trade, when commercial fishing and sophisticated drying techniques allowed them to expand the market throughout Europe. Trade Centers In the Viking homeland, major trading centers included Ribe, Kaupang, Birka, Ahus, Truso, Grop Stromkendorf, and Hedeby. Goods were brought to these centers and then dispersed into the Viking society. Many of these site assemblages include an abundance of a soft yellow earthenware called Badorf-ware, produced in the Rhineland; Sindbà ¦k has argued that these items, rarely found on non-trading communities, were used as containers to bring goods to places, rather than as trade items. In 2013, Grupe et al. conducted stable isotope analysis of skeletal material at the Viking trade center of Haithabu (later Schleswig) in Denmark. They found that the diet of the individuals expressed in the human bones reflected the relative significance of trade over time. Members of the earlier community showed a predominance of freshwater fish (cod imported from the North Atlantic) in their diet, while later residents shifted to a diet of terrestrial domestic animals (local farming). Norse-Inuit Trade Theres some evidence in the Viking Sagas that trade played a role in the North American contact between the Norse and the Inuit occupants. Also, Norse symbolic and utilitarian objects are found at Inuit sites and similar Inuit objects in Norse sites. There are fewer Inuit objects in Norse sites, a fact which may be because the trade goods were organic, or that the Norse exported some Inuit prestige items into the wider European trade network. Evidence at the site of Sandhavn in Greenland seems to suggest that the quite rare co-existence of Inuit and Norse there was a result of the opportunity to trade with one another. Ancient DNA evidence from the Farm Beneath the Sand (GUS) site, also in Greenland, however, finds no support for the trade of bison robes, posited earlier from morphological examination. Viking and Islamic Trade Connections In a 1989 study of formal weights discovered at the Viking site of Paviken in Gotland near Vastergarn, Sweden, Erik Sperber reported three main types of trading weights in use: Ball-shaped weights of ironclad with a layer of bronze or solid bronze; these vary between 4 and 200 gmCubo-octaedric weights of lead bronze, tin bronze or brass; up to 4.2 gramsLeaden weights of different shapes and sizes Sperber believes at least some of these weights conform to the Islamic system of the Ummayyad dynasty leader Abd al Malik. The system, established in 696/697, is based on the dirhem of 2.83 grams and the mitqa of 2.245 grams. Given the breadth of Viking trade, it is likely that the Vikings and their partners may have utilized several trade systems. Next mornin Dan loaned me a dollar an I foun a pay phone an called up to Boston to ole Mose, that used to be the drummer for The Cracked Eggs. Sure enough, he still there in his place, an is damn suprised to hear from me. â€Å"Forrest – I don’t believe it!† Mose say. â€Å"We had given your ass up for lost!† The Cracked Eggs, he says, have broken up. All the money that Mister Feeblestein have promised them is eaten up by expenses or somethin, an after the secont record they didn’t get no more contracts. Mose say people is listenin to a new kind of music now – Rollin Stoned’s or the Iggles or somethin – an most of the fellers in The Cracked Eggs is gone someplace an foun real jobs. Jenny, Mose say, is not been heard of in a long wile. After she had gone down to Washington for the peace demonstration where I was arrested, she went back with The Cracked Eggs for a few months, but Mose say somethin in her jus wadn’t the same. One time he say, she broke up cryin on the stage an they had to play a instrumental to get thru the set. Then she started drinkin vodka an showin up late for performances an they was bout to speak to her bout it when she jus done up an quit. Mose say he personally feel her behavior has somethin to do with me, but she never would talk bout it. She moved out of Boston a couple of weeks later, sayin she was goin to Chicago, an that is the last he seen of her in nearly five years. I axed if he knew any way for me to reach her, an he say maybe he have a ole number she give him jus before she lef. He leave the phone an come back a few minutes later an give the number to me. Other than that, he say, â€Å"I ain’t got a clue.† I tole him to take care, an if I ever get up to Boston I will look him up. â€Å"You still playin your harmonica?† Mose axed. â€Å"Yeah, sometimes,† I say. I went an borrowed another dollar from Dan an called the number in Chicago. â€Å"Jenny Curran – Jenny?† a guy’s voice say. â€Å"Oh, yeah – I remember her. Nice little piece of ass. Been a long time.† â€Å"You know where she’s at?† â€Å"Indianapolis is where she say she was goin when she lef here. Who knows? Got herself a job at Temperer.† â€Å"At what?† â€Å"Temperer – the tire factory. You know, they make tires – for cars.† I thank the guy an went back an tole Dan. â€Å"Well,† he say, â€Å"I never been to Indianapolis. Heard it’s nice there in the fall.† We started tryin to thumb a ride out of Washington, but didn’t have no luck to speak of. A guy gave us a ride to the city limits on the back of a brick truck, but after that, nobody didn’t want to pick us up. I guess we was too funny-lookin or somethin – Dan settin on his little roller dolly an my big ole ass standin nex to him. Anyhow, Dan say why don’t we take a bus, cause he’s got enough money for that. To tell you the truth, I felt bad about takin his money, but somehow I figgered that he wanted to go, and it would be good to get him outta Washington too. An so we caught a bus to Indianapolis an I put Dan in the seat nex to me an stowed his little cart in the shelf up above. All the way there he be sluggin down Red Dagger wine an sayin what a shitty place the world is to live in. Maybe he’s right. I don’t know. I’m just a idiot anyhow. The bus left us off in the middle of Indianapolis an Dan an me is standin on the street tryin to figger out what to do nex when a policeman come up an say, â€Å"Ain’t no loiterin on the street,† an so we moved on. Dan axed a feller where is the Temperer Tire Company an it is way outside of town so we started headin in that direction. After a wile there ain’t no sidewalks an Dan can’t push his little cart along, so I picked him up under one arm and the cart under the other an we kep on goin. Bout noon, we seed a big sign say â€Å"Temperer Tires,† an figger this be the place. Dan say he will wait outside an I go on in an they is a woman at the desk an I axed if I could see Jenny Curran. Woman look at a list an say Jenny is workin in â€Å"re-treads,† but ain’t nobody allowed to go there cept’n if they works in the plant. Well, I’m just standin there, tryin to decide what to do, an the woman say, â€Å"Look, honey, they is bout to get a lunch break in a minute or so, why don’t you go roun to the side of the buildin. Probly she’ll come out,† so that’s what I did. A Modest Proposal Response Paper Example For Students

A Modest Proposal Response Paper For many people throughout the United States, it is a melancholy but common sight to see broken families, separated children, and squabbling spouses. In a society in which over 20% of marriages end in divorce, it is not surprising that the majority of todays children grow up in a one parent marriage. The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that in 1993, about 1,187,000 divorces were granted in the U.S., affecting 1,075,000 children. Sadly, some children are even deprived of seeing their mother or father throughout their entire childhood. Many others are allowed to visit one of their parents only once or twice a month. This lack of family unity results in emotional and psychological problems for both the parents and the children. I think it is agreed by most people that the increasing rate of divorce and the problems related to it are subjects of great concern. In fact, anyone who could devise a plan that would restore family unity and bring meaning to the line till death do you part deserves a medal. Having turned my thoughts to the issue for several years now, I have developed a reasonable solution. I humbly propose that the government create a new department, The Department of Marriage Control and Enforcement (DMCE). It will be the job of this agency to prevent troubled marriages from occurring in the first place and to eliminate divorces all together. After a couple has recited their vows, the tradition of exchanging wedding rings will be abolished. Instead, a DMCA official will lock a steel ring onto the bride and the groom. The steel rings will symbolize the newly wedded couples commitment to one another and the fact that their future time together has no end. The DMCA official will then weld a three-foot-long chain to each ring, forcing the couple to remain together at all times. Chaining a couple together will prevent couples from obtaining a divorce because the couples will be chained together for the rest of their life. Since couples will be chained together, they will b e forced to think long and hard about marriage before they exchange their vows. Additionally, chaining a couple together will result in increased communication between wives and husbands. Because they will always be together, they will be required to communicate with each other. No secrets will exist between the two. Also, adultery will be greatly reduced due to the fact that spouses are never separated by more than three feet. But my intention is far from being confined to assisting only the bride and groom. It is very likely that during their marriage a couple will want to have children. Immediately after a child is born, a DMCA official will lock a steel ring around his waist and chain him to the couple. The chain will ensure that the child receives proper the proper attention needed to mature into a healthy individual. It will also increase family unity and ensure that a parent is involved in the childs life. At the age of 18, or whenever the parent deems fit, a DMCA official will unlock the child from the family chain to start dating and eventually create a new family chain. As for the number of people who decide not to marry, I am not in the least concerned, because every day they are growing older and dying without reproducing. If two individuals have a child out of wedlock, the baby must immediately be adopted by a married couple and chained to their family. Growing up in a united family will teach the child the virtues of marriage and the child will be more likely to marry than to remain single. Since there will a greater percentage of married couples, they will reproduce at a faster rate than those who decide to remain single. Eventually, the number of singles will become so insignificant that every person will marry someone else in order to avoid discrimination. .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 , .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 .postImageUrl , .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 , .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2:hover , .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2:visited , .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2:active { border:0!important; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2:active , .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2 .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue03567b637d8b34f9f842438c693a3c2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The most dangerous game EssayI have too long digressed and will return to my original subject. Longfellows optimism in writin Essay Example For Students

Longfellows optimism in writin Essay Look not mournfully into the past. It comes not back again. Wisely improve the present. It is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy future, without fear, and with a manly heart. This is a saying Longfellow read in Germany where his wife died. The words gave him hope for the future. It inspired him to want to write a series of psalms. The first one, A Psalm of Life written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is an uplifting poem that compels us to feel hope for the future. After reading it the first time it had a powerful effect on me. Surprisingly, he wrote this poem few months after his first wife died. Longfellow took his wifes death and interpreted it as a sign to look at life as fleeting and it passes quickly. I feel that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, after his wifes death, had an optimistic view on life in the poem, A Psalm of Life. The second stanza seems to say that life is here and it must be lived. It is real and not just some dream. Line five supports this with the hopeful exclamation that Life is real! Life is earnest! In the next line he says And the grave is not its goal. Longfellow feels you dont live to die. Death is not the point of living a just life. Lastly in this stanza, he states, Dust thou art, o dust returnest, was not spoken of the soul. Our bodies will turn to dust but the soul will live on. He feel there is an afterlife and we are here forever in spirit. But what we do with our time on earth is what makes us eternal because we are remembered for how we lived our lives. (Lines 5-8, pg. 302) In the fifth stanza Longfellow advises the reader to fight and to be active rather than sitting around in a passive way. We are told to trust no future because we dont know what the future holds. We are to act in the living present because it is the here and now that is important and we must be concerned with worrying that the future will revisit us with the pain and suffering of our past. We are not to live in the past for being stuck in the past will get you nowhere. Then in the sixth stanza, Longfellow tells to be reminded of the lives of great men because we can make our lives sublime. This shows we should look at the heroes of the past, emulate them, and follow their leads. In doing this you yourself can become a hero and leave footprints on the sands of time. We must strive to make a difference in the lives of the future so we may live on forever. (Lines25-32, pg. 302) In the final stanza, Longfellow is prodding us to work toward achieving our goal no matter what the future holds. We must be up and doing and not sitting around watching life go by. We cant be afraid and we must live with a heart for any fate. He is saying that we must accept fate as part of the plan for the greater good of all man. We must never give up in achieving our goal because there is hope for the future. You have to keep on getting up after you fall and try again or you will never accomplish anything meaningful. Lastly, you must learn to labor and to wait. Hard work and patience is what Longfellow is calling for in this final line. He is encouraging us to work with our hearts full of optimism for a bright future. A rose for emily characterization Essay (Lines 34-36, pg. 303) I feel that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, after his wifes death, had an optimistic outlook in A Psalm of Life. It encourages you to go out and accomplish things. It seems he felt a new resolve to live a more fulfilling life after his depression lifted. He shows through his poetry a renewed interest in moving away from the past that had troubled him. Something in his life gave him expectations and hope to live each day to the fullest and be .
